This Ghouls Favorite Horror Films of 2013

That's right, my little deadlings, 2014 is upon us! Whenever a new year starts it is very common for people to do a few things. One, they make a New Years Resolution and Two, they reflect on the previous year. Right now I am going to go back and think of all of the horror movies that were released last year that I fell in love with! I am only basing this on the films I saw, so if I leave out a favorite of yours, please leave a comment in the section below. I love recommendations as well.

So, the first movie that comes to mind is Evil Dead! This one stole my heart, shredded it to bits with a chainsaw, and then re-animated it for round two! I went into this knowing I was already going to love it. I love the original, I love the cast, and the trailer gave me goosebumps. The day it came out I saw it and didn't love it.. I mother fucking worshiped it! I was so head over heels that I saw it again less than 10 hours later.

This was, and still is, the best reboot I have seen in years (no offense Rob Zombie) and I don't hate remakes or reboots... so if that doesn't say something, I don't know what does. I am not one of those people that gets their panties in a bunch over a remake, even one of a classic horror film. When someone decides to remake a famous film there is no pleasing 100% of the viewers. You will always have someone that wants a retelling of the story with a new or modern twist or, on the flip side, you will always have someone that wants to see a the same story, but with better effects. Then you have people like me. I love horror and I want a good movie with a great cast, an awesome script, and kick as special effects, same story or a reboot. Good horror is good horror.

I got a bit off topic. Bottom line, if you love a good gore fest filled with more blood than all the Scream movies combined, see Evil Dead!

Next on my list is American Mary. Not since Angela Bettis in May have I been so enamored over a horror movie based around a female lead. The Soska sisters really made their mark with this one!

Here you have Katherine Isabelle as Mary Mason. Mary is a medical student studying to become a surgeon, but her lack of funds is threatening this dream. She ends up finding a way to earn easy money be performing underground surgeries for people wanting unconventional body modifications. I don't want to give the whole story away, so I am going to leave it at that. This movie has a great story line, some unforgetable characters, and will leave you with the thought "Is a split tongue just a body modification, or can it be art?" If you watch this, which you should, keep an ear our for the scenes playing "Ave Maria". This song plays a few times throughout the film and becomes more complex to mirror Mary's skill level.

Maniac is another film that came out from nowhere are made me fall in love with it. Maniac is another remake. The original came out in the 80s and not too many people that I know were even aware that this newer one wasn't an original. I love when this happens to lesser known films, this way there is less of a crowd to dismiss a film simply because it is a remake. Also, it will give the original film more attention. I hate the idea that a horror film will be forgotten simply because it is old and wasn't a blockbuster.

Anyways, back to the film... Maniac stars Elijah Wood as Frank, a young man who takes over his families mannequin business and is helping an artist with her exhibit. Frank had a strange childhood growing up with a mother who was a prostitute and let men do awful things to her, some of those things witnessed by Frank as a child. Growing up like this gave Frank strange compulsions and have also led to him never having meaningful relationships with women.

This movie is creepy and amazing. When I am at home watching a movie I am usually just half watching it. I might be reading, crafting, or doing laundry while it is on. If a movie is good I will replay it several times during the week and even make my husband watch it. This film had my attention the entire time it was on. I just sat on my ass, under a quilt with a pet my my side. One aspect of the film that stands out the most is that the entire movie is shot from Frank's perspective. You only ever see him if there is a mirror or a window where you can see his reflection. Overall, this movie kept me watching and wishing that Elijah Wood did more films like this. I would also like to mention that I never had a crush on him until I saw this film, which probably says all sorts of fucked up things about me.

Another film I adored was The Purge. Some people call this a thriller, others call it Sci-Fi with the futuristic setting, I call it horror. The country has 12 hours where all crime is legal and a groups target is locked in your house and the group knows it and will stop at nothing to get him back... If that isn't scary, I don't know what is.

If I had to describe this movie as anything it would be the best B rate horror film ever! Nothing about it was over the top, except the concept. It had a good story, a good cast, and the last few minutes made me laugh so hard I almost peed my pants. If this film had a smaller budget and some lesser known actors, it probably would have straight to video and would
have a cult following by now.

On to the next one on my radar is Lords of Salem. This movie was strange and left a lot of questions unanswered... and I'm okay with that. Not everything has to be wrapped up into a nice, neat little package. Not everything needs a happily ever after, though that depends on what character you're talking to. This film is visually stunning and confusing. There is hardly a scene where you can look at it and not say to yourself, "oh that's pretty". Everything reminded me of a Kubrick film. Why that wallpaper? Why that room? Why that wall art? Why those night stands? Everything felt like there was a story behind it that only Rob Zombie knew and I like that. Besides, what fun is a riddle that you can solve in a few seconds?

Since this is a Rob Zombie movie, the usual suspects are present, plus some other familiar faces. I will say, this movie isn't going to be for everyone, so don't think that just because you liked my recommendations in the past that you will like this one.

Last, but not least, I must mention The Conjuring. I wasn't sure what to expect. The trailer was awesome, but I was worried that it may have given away all of the only good parts. Thank god I was wrong! It kept me on the edge of my seat, talking to the screen, and wanting more. Not to mention, I have a serious lady boner for Patrick Wilson. This is another film I saw saw twice in theaters and purchased. This is one of those films that will always be somewhat creepy if you watch it at night with the lights out. I honestly can't think of a single flaw. I became some obsessed with the film that I started making items with Lorraine Warrens and other images from the film for sale in my Etsy shop. Two of which have sold in the last few days. If you love a good haunted house flick, this is for you. I don't want to say too much because I don't think anything I have to say will do this film justice.

A few other films I saw this year that are worth mentioning include You're Next, ABC's of Death, Mama, V/H/S 2, and Texas Chainsaw. I told you I love a good remake.

World War Z was another good one. I am about to geek out, so don't judge me... but am I the only one amused that the next Doctor for Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi was credited as a W.H.O. Doctor in World War Z? Ohh aaaaaaaannnnd he was in Torchwood!?!! Who fans know! Okay, now that I have made a dork of myself, I hope you all enjoyed my list and if you saw something I didn't and have a recommendation, please leave it in the comments below!

Stay Sweet and Twisted,

Sara

This Ghouls Holiday Wish List 2013

So there are a few things that have caught my eye this holiday season that I am dying to have! Who knows if I will actually get them as gifts or if I will end up buying them for myself, we shall see. I will put a link for the more obscure items in the descriptions. So without further ado, my holiday wish list for 2013!

1. Now, this item just tickles me to no end. Not only is it practical, but it is kitschy and horrifying! This item is a beanie with the carpet pattern at The Overlook Hotel in The Shining! Unfortunately, it is sold out at the Connoisseur website. Hopefully it comes back soon!

2. As a lover of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate, it should come to no surprise that I have a mug on my list. Not just any mug, though.... a sugar skull mug. This one is available on eBay. There are several variations all over the internet, this is just one I liked.

3. Recently I discovered Red Bubble. This is a site where artists can have their work put on shirts, hoodies, and stickers. Sooooo naturally I searched for John Waters and Divine. I found this gem of a baseball tee with a quote from the film Serial Mom.

4. And this lovely hoodie is also a Red Bubble item featuring another John Waters film, Female Trouble!

5. This is something you can find at most places that sell dvds as well as on-line. Yes, I want the Bewitched Box Set!!!!

6. Of course I am adding a book to my wish list! This month I am dying to read Night Film by Marisha Pessl.

"On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova—a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than thirty years.

For McGrath, another death connected to this seemingly cursed family dynasty seems more than just a coincidence. Though much has been written about Cordova’s dark and unsettling films, very little is known about the man himself. Driven by revenge, curiosity, and a need for the truth, McGrath, with the aid of two strangers, is drawn deeper and deeper into Cordova’s eerie, hypnotic world.

The last time he got close to exposing the director, McGrath lost his marriage and his career. This time he might lose even more."

7. And last, but not least, I want a new cover for my Samsung Note 2. This one I found on Etsy at a shop called Pocketcase.

I hope you liked my wish list and that if you needed an idea for that gore whore or kitsch bitch in your life... that this list helped.

As always, Stay sweet and twisted,

Fa La La La Busy

So far this holiday season hasn't gone without a few bumps in the road. I have been working my usual week day shifts at a book store and doing Etsy things in my spare time. I have also been restocking shops that carry my items as well. Between those three things, Christmas shopping, and trying to keep up with friends... well, let's just say cleaning and laundry have not been on my to do list! I have been trying my gosh darndest to hit the gym every week, and this was actually the first week in months that I wasn't able to do that. Tomorrow is another day, what can I say... plus the night is still young. We'll see what happens.

I think the biggest bump was one of my cats had to have emergency surgery. She had an infection that required attention asap. Luckily she is doing better and is getting her sutures out tomorrow! Poor kitty only weighs 5 pounds and looked like she had swallowed a softball. It turns out she had a common uteral infection and when the doctor removed her uterus it weighed 7 pounds, 2 pounds more than she does! I can't believe how much I have cried over this cat. Lord knows I can never have children if I get this mentally and physically exhausted over a cat.

Now that my cat is better, my shopping and restocking are almost done, I have many things on my task list that I would like to start chiseling away at. I want to work more with my team The Etsy Massacre. I became a team leader with this group and one of my biggest plans is to continue working on The Teams Facebook Page. This team features artists that specialize in horror. You will find art, jewelry, clothes, and even some special fx props and make up.

As far as my shop goes, I am looking to start adding more fun and kitschy items to the stock. I am going through a massive phase where I am in love with anything and everything brass, wood, or acrylic. So keep an eye out for that.

As far as my blog goes, I want to get back into my normal groove of making posts every week. I want to restart my FEARce Five posts, do more interviews, and get back into my horror trivia groove. Interviews are a love hate relationship. I enjoy making up an interview and getting to know people, but I don't always have people respond to my questions and I get stuck doing all of this work for nothing. It's hard to stay motivated when people don't what they say they will. Anyways....

If you would like to get more horror in your life or what to know what I am up to, the best way to cyber stalk a ghoul is to find me on Twitter: @aghoulsbestfrnd or instagram: AGHOULSBESTFRIEND #AGBF

Also, I am less than 10 sales away from hitting my 500th! When I hit 500 sales I will be having a fun giveaway. More details to come. You must be a Facebook Fan to participate in the giveaway. Anyone who has liked my Facebook page is in the running for the giveaway! You can find my FB fan page here.

I think that is all for now. I will be posting a holiday wish list tonight, so keep a look out for that.

Until next time, Stay sweet and twisted,

Catching Up With A Ghoul

Hello my Deadlings,

I have been MIA for the last two weeks and wanted to make a quick post about This Ghouls Life!

This week I have so much going on, I don't know where to start! Currently, I am having a lovely day at home with nothing on the agenda, but crafting and horror movies. This weekend my items will be in two places at once! I will be sending some items to a craft show in Delaware. It is mostly Fall Holiday items that fill this place to the brim! I'm sure you can guess what kinds of items I will be sending along with another vendor. While that show is commencing, I will be in Jim Thorpe, PA for the annual Boolesque Festival! I am so excited! I see a burlesque show at least once a year in PA and this is, by far, my most favorite burlesque event I have ever attended! I am super excited to see the burlesque legend, Penny Starr perform!

While I am in town, I will be restocking a shop in Jim Thorpe called 13th Moon Creations. This shop is amazing and a half! Handmade soaps and beauty products on top of hair dye, horror decor, items from local artists, and some killer finds from Sour Puss Clothing! I am hoping that I can talk the owner into doing an interview with me for next month before the holiday madness kicks in!

Halloween in this week! I am excited!!! Not only is it my most favorite holiday, but it is also the day I got married to my best friend, James. We will be spending the day together, hopefully going to a corn maze, drinking cider, and giving one another some spooky fun gifts!

I will also be getting a makeover of sorts tomorrow as well! I have never had a makeover or a facial from a professional, so I am very excited. A lady that is a friend of a friend is trying to do 60 makeovers to be entered to win a trip to New Orleans from Mary Kay! Very exciting. I always love beauty tips and trying out new products, so I can't wait for tomorrow!

Overall, this month has been awesome! I went to the circus for the first time in years, I have already gotten a ton of anniversary cards in the mail, and I am getting ready for the holidays. Netflix has added a ton of awesome movies and more episodes of great shows, so I will have that going on while I work on Etsy things.

Speaking of which, I am officially a team leader with the Etsy Massacre Team! This a group of talented people that do everything from horror inspired art to special fx pieces. You can check out the team in many different ways: Blogger, Twitter, Facebook, or do a search on Etsy for "etsymassacre". I am in charge of the Twitter and Facebook accounts and I will be in the process of revamping them both with more info and more pictures! I am very excited to be including several new members as well!

As much as I love to blog, I don't always have a chance to. If you are looking to get your fill of this Ghoul and her thoughts, please feel free to follow me in Instagram. You can find me under the name: AGHOULSBESTFRIEND! I am alway on Twitter, Facebook, and Etsy.

FEARce Five Vol. 8 - Joan Cusack

Greetings my dears. Today I am going to keep this weeks FEARce Five as short and simple as possible. This Ghoul has things to do and people to see. AKA I am doing laundry and cleaning before Adam to my Barbara comes home from work. (Did you like the Beetle Juice reference?)

Today's FEARce Five is all about Joan Cusack. This lovely lady just celebrated her 51st birthday yesterday, so Happy Birthday, Joan! Joan is one of those Hollywood dolls that happens to not only have another actor in the family (her brother John Cusack), but has been able to work with him as well. However, today's FEARce Five is going to leave John out. Sorry, ghouls. Today's list is my favorite Joan Cusack films that her brother isn't in. I hope you like them!

This Ghoul's Top Five Joan Cusack Films
That John Cusack Isn't In

1. The Addams Family Values

2. Toys

3. The School of Rock

4. In and Out

5. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I would like to add that I did not include Shameless in the list because it is a tv show, not a film, but it is none the less awesome! I highly recommend this show!!!!!!

I hope you enjoyed today's FEARce Five!

A Divine Documentary

Back in June, I went to the Maryland Film festival at The Charles Theater and saw a film that made my heart melt. I was going to make a post about the film, but time was not on my side and before I knew it, the summer was over. I went to a showing of this film again, last night to be exact, and with everything still fresh in my mind, I would love to share my experience and thoughts with my sweet and twisted readers.

The film I saw is a documentary on the one and only Divine! Anyone that knows me can tell you that this is a film I have been waiting to be released for freaking ever! The second I found out that this was in the works I began following the I Am Divine film on every social networking site under the sun.

For those of you who do not know who Divine was, let me take a moment to get you in the loop. Divine is a man from Baltimore that most commonly known for being in the early films of John Waters. He typically had the lead role in these films, often portraying a female character. Some of his films include Female Trouble, Polyester, Lust in the Dust (this is not a John Waters film), Multiple Maniacs, Hairspray, and the notorious, Pink Flamingos. In between these films, Glenn (the man behind the make-up and character of Divine), toured, recorded music, and even performed on stage. He spent time in New York acting in plays and in California working with a group called The Cockettes.

There were many aspects of the character Divine that made him stand out. First off, Divine was not a small person. He usually weighed around 300 pounds and being that size and dressed like a female was quite a sight. Now add in the fact that he wore outfits a large woman would never dream of wearing the having eyebrows and eye make-up so loud that half of his head was shaved to make more room for them, you have yourself one heck of an attention getter. To say Divine stood out was an understatement. Everything about this character was big and loud, including his personality. Divine was loud, crude, perverse, in your face, and a shit stirrer. Divine wasn't just a some character Glenn played, Divine was a force to be reckoned with.

I Am Divine is a documentary that told Glenn and Divine's story. Since Divine passed away in 1988 there was no interview or where are they now aspect to this film. However, it is filled with lots of behind the scenes footage, recorded stage performances, and interviews with Divine. On top of that, it is filled to the brim with interviews from John Waters, drag queens, film critics, fellow Dreamlanders, fellow cockettes, agents, and even Glenn's mother, Frances Milstead. Everyone has such wonderful antidotes to share about Divy.

The only thing about this film that is awful is knowing how it will end, with Divine passing away. Each time I have seen this I have cried. It's sort of like watching Titanic, you get so wrapped up in the story and the music that you secretly hope they don't hit the iceberg and everyone has a safe trip. What makes this film so hard to watch is knowing that by the time Divine is finally getting recognized for the amazingly talented performer that he is, he dies. That being said, as many tears as I cried while watching this, I had five times more laughs throughout the film. Let's be honest, you can't watch a movie about a cult film performer dressed as a woman and not have a good laugh.

When I saw this film last night, I was at the historic Senator Theatre on York Road. This theater has quite a name for itself. Many movies filmed locally premiere at this venue including, those by John Waters. I'm bringing this up because the first clip you see in I Am Divine is of John and Divy at the premiere of Hairspray outside of the Senator. This is also the same place where the beginning of Cecil B. Demented was filmed as well. It was surreal to watch a film about someone who had spent one of the happiest days of their life in the very same place I was currently at. It as a wonderful film about an amazing person and I can't wait to see it again!

Until next time, stay sweet and twisted!

FEARce Five Vol. 7 - Krya Schon

Greetings Boils and Ghouls! This week has been a busy one as far as celebrating horror films and their anniversaries! On Monday, September 30th, Elvira Mistress of the Dark celebrated it's 25th anniversary. Yesterday, October 2nd, Strangeland hit it's 15th year of being creepy as all hell with one of my favorite soundtracks to date. Just thought I'd throw that in. One top of that, October 1st marked the 45th anniversary of Night of the Living Dead. As if that wasn't cool enough, today, October 4th is Kyra Schon's birthday.

Now, for those of you that can't place a face to the name, Kyra Schon is the actress who played Karen in Night of the Living Dead. That's right, she was the trowel wielding, mother stabbing, father's arm eating, zombie we all know and love.

For today's FEARce Five I am going to celebrate this lovely ghoul's birthday by giving you five awesome facts you may not have known about Kyra Schon and some sites where you can buy some of her art. Yes! I said buy some of her art!

Five Things You May Not Have Known About Kyra Schon

1. Kyra Schon's father is Karl Hardman, who played her father in Night of the Living Dead.

2. Kyra is as spooky as they come and not only has her own website called Ghoul Next Door, but is also a regular contributor to the horror site: Dread Central!

3. In the early 80's, Kyra spent some time trying to "find herself", as she puts it. She lived in Montana during this time and eventually moved back to her home town of Pittsburgh, PA. That's right, we have ourselves and East Coaster!

4. These days, Kyra teaches pottery and sculpture at an art school. She also finds time to make appearances at conventions when she can.

5. Kyra Schon has an Etsy page where you can purchase some of her work! Her shop is called Stone House Arts

I hope you all have enjoyed this volume of Friday's FEARce Five!

Stay Sweet and Twisted,
